EUGENE, Ore. – Nathan Green secured yet another top-10 finish at the USATF Outdoor Championships in the 1,500-meters, placing eighth overall in a sizzling final at Hayward Field. Green led three Husky alumni in the race, running 3:33.25.
On the third day of the four-day U.S. Championships, Green held the very fast pace set by U.S. mile record-holder Yared Nuguse, as the pack strung out single file. He was still in touch with the lead group going into the final couple of turns, but was at the back of the pack and unable to move up as the pace stayed extremely fast to the end. Jonah Koech took a surprise win in 3:30.17, as Paris Olympics gold medalist Cole Hocker was third and Nuguse and Hobbs Kessler, top-five in Paris, did not make the top-three, showing how incredibly deep and talented the U.S. is in the event.
Green's time was the third-fastest of his career; the second-fastest came on Thursday in the prelims, as he ran two 3:33 times just two days apart.
2024 grads Joe Waskom and Luke Houser were 10th and 11th, respectively, in 3:39.18 and 3:39.44. Former UW coach Sam Prakel was ninth in 3:33.70.
Also competing today was recent grad Scott Toney, who recently cleared a PR of 18-9 1/2 in his lead-up to USAs. Toney took 11th in the pole vault, making the opening height of 18-1 1/4 on a third attempt, but going out at 18-5 1/4.
Another recent grad, hurdler Matthew Wilkinson, made his USA debut and finished 18th overall in a time of 53.29.
The Championships conclude on Sunday, highlighted by the women's pole vault at 12 noon that features rising juniors Hana and Amanda Moll, as well as 2024 grad Nastassja Campbell.
