Washington Topples No. 15 USC On The Road To Open Big Ten Play
September 11, 2025 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – The Washington women's soccer team walked into No. 15 USC newly minted Rawlinson Stadium in its Big Ten opener Thursday night and walked away with a 1-0, earning three points to leap to the top of the conference standings.
The victory snaps a three-match losing streak to the Trojans and is Washington's first victory over USC since 2019. It's also UW's first top-15 road win since that toppling of the Trojans, who were ranked No. 7 at the time.
Washington outshot USC for the second year running, putting nine attempts at the Trojans' goal, while fending off six shots with a dogged defensive effort.
Sophomore keeper Tanner Ijams picked up her fourth clean sheet of the season and her first career shutout against Big Ten opposition.
After a probing out period through the first 25 plus minutes by both teams, the Huskies took the lead in the 29th minute when Samiah Shell slipped Alex Buck behind the USC back line. The UW speedster flicked the ball past the charging keeper, slotting into the vacant goal to put the Dawgs on top.
It was Buck's first goal of her sophomore season, second of her career.
Rather than sit back and protect after the halftime break, Washington chased a second.
Samiah Shell came mere inches from doubling the advantage in the 60th minute, cutting inside onto her left foot from 25 yards out, striking the crossbar.
15 minutes later, Kolo Suliafu turned defense to offense. The SoCal native picked a ball off deep in UW's defensive half and charged forward, running onto Jadyn Holdenried's slip pass. Suliafu nearly capped the 60-plus yard run inside the 18, settling instead for a corner to milk valuable seconds off the clock.
From there, the Dawgs killed off the final 10 minutes expertly with tenacious resilience, clearing countless balls into their own box until the clock hit triple zeroes.
Washington resumes Big Ten play next Thursday, hosting Northwestern at Husky Soccer Stadium for a 7:00 p.m. PT kickoff. The match will stream live on B1G+.
