Cohen Wins Gold With USA Four at 2025 World Championships
September 26, 2025 | Women's Rowing
Two more Washington Rowing alumni earned medals late Thursday at the 2025 World Rowing Championships in Shanghai, as Teal Cohen won a gold medal in the women's four, and Gert-Jan van Doorn raced to a bronze medal in the men's four.
Those two picked up medals a day after the Husky duo of Jess Thoennes and Holly Drapp won bronze in the women's pair.
On Thursday (Friday morning in China), Cohen (pictured, second from left) and her United States four posted an impressive come-from-behind win, as their boat was in fifth place at 500 meters and third at 1,000. In the third 500, the Americans rowed through the Romanian and British fours to win the final and the gold medal. A 2024 Olympian, Cohen won her first medal at the senior level.
In the men's four final, Husky alum Gert-Jan van Doorn and his Dutch four rowed to a third-place finish to earn the bronze medal. Van Doorn is another Olympics veteran, having won silver in the eight in Paris last summer.
Earlier Thursday evening, two UW men rowed in separate semifinals in the single sculls, needing a top-three finish in each to reach the A final. In the first semi, Simon van Dorp of the Netherlands finished in second place, keeping him in contention for a medal. In the other semi, Logan Ullrich of New Zealand finished fourth, just missing a spot in the A final.
Also Thursday, Canadian Sally Jones and her crew finished second in the women's four B final, placing them eighth in the world. In the men's four B final, Pieter Quinton and his American crew finished fifth.
Just after midnight Pacific Time (Saturday morning), a long list of UW alumni will compete in the women's and men's eight finals. At 12:05 a.m. PT, Nina Castagna (USA), Sophie Houston (AUS) and Tabea Schendekehl will all row for medals in the women's final. The men's eight finals follows at 12:18 a.m. PT, when Pieter Quinton (USA), Madison Molitor (USA), Nick Dunlop (AUS) and Archie Drummond (GB) will all vie for the world championship.
Earlier Friday evening (Pacific Time), Huskies will row in the men's and women's eight B finals. In the women's race, Jones will row again with her Canadian eight, while Aisha Rocek will race for Italy. In the men's B final, two Huskies – Steve Rosts and Joel Cullen – will compete in the Canadian entry.
