REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – The No. 5-ranked Washington women's rowing team retained the Simpson Cup with a win over No. 10 California in the 49th edition of The Dual Saturday. The Huskies won six of seven races vs. the Bears, including the varsity eight, the race in which the Simpson Cup is decided.
Washington won the first, second and fourth varsity eights races, as well as all three (first, second and third) fours. California's third varsity eight won its race over a UW novice crew.
The Huskies and Bears had seen another two weeks previous, at the San Diego Crew Classic, where Washington finished ahead of Cal in all three NCAA race categories (first and second eights, and varsity fours).
Saturday, in the Simpson Cup varsity eight race, Cal gave the Huskies a solid challenge, maintaining contact with the Huskies throughout the 2,000-meter race. Washington held off the Bears to win the race with a time of 6:43.0, with Cal crossing the line in 6:45.7, just 2.7 seconds back.
Washington won the Simpson Cup, named in honor of and donated by longtime Washington supporters Hunter and Dottie Simpson, for the 28th time, and for the fifth time in the last six Duals.
The second varsity eights race was a much more comfortable win for the Huskies, who finished with a time of 6:43.7, more than 11.5 seconds in front of Cal (6:55.4).
Washington won the first and second varsity fours races with a similar margin of about five seconds, while taking the third varsity fours race by more than 12 seconds.
In the third varsity eight race, Washington's novice eight (the crew consisted of nine freshmen), fell to Cal by about one boat-length. The morning opened with a UW win the fourth varsity eights, with Washington coasting to a 25.5-second victory.
Next Saturday and Sunday, April 18-19, the UW women will travel to Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif. (longtime home of the Pac-12 Championships) for the Big Ten Invitational. That regatta will included all 11 Big Ten programs, along with eight others (including Stanford and California).
