No. 8 Arizona (73) at No. 21 Washington (77) Post-Game Quotes
Washington Head Coach: June Daugherty
General Comments: "We've been working hard to get better and tonight it was time to show people what we're all about. We were embarrassed in Arizona. We're certainly excited about the win. Gena (Pelz) and Amber (Hall) definitely had a big night against a tough challenge in (Adia) Barnes and (Marte) Alexander. Sarah Duncan had a huge game both offensively and defensively. It was a real test of our composure. You keep seeing the character of this team. The underdog is a role we thrive on. Most of all it takes a little pressure off. They have enormous pride in being Huskies and they're not going to back down from anybody."
Washington Forward Gena Pelz On reacting to intentional foul: "We had to make sure that we were together. The big basket by Amber (Hall) pumped us up a lot. We knew that if we ran our plays and executed that we would get those two points, when Amber came through, we knew we were on our way."
On game strategy: "June (Daugherty) said that we needed to be behind (Marte) Alexander and push her out. This week we worked a lot on her attack to cut off that shoulder. We did a better jub, but we still need to work more on it. A lot of times we didn't give them good looks at the basket and they were fading away so that was a big key for us."
"We were all just making sure that we were focused and aware of what was around us tonight."Washington Guard Sarah Duncan
General comments: "Big time win. This is our break-through and we are back."
Washington Guard Jamie Redd
General comments: "You look at the first half of the season and we could have played a lot better than we played and we didn't. We made it very clear that we had to step up and play in the second half if we want to go somewhere further than the Pac-10 because we had not beaten anyone tough in our conference. This is a start for us and we have to keep playing like we were in the beginning."Arizona Head Coach: Joan Bonvicini
General Coach Comments: "This loss hurts bad. I am very disappointed and upset. We just did not get the job done. Our focus was not there at crucial times in the game. We had a great comeback at the end of the game and we showed a lot of heart. What killed us down the stretch was poor shot selections. We missed countless lay-ups that came back to haunt us at the end of the game."
On the Huskies: "I think that overall we did a good job of containing Jamie Redd. She seemed to score tonight in bunches. What killed us was Washington pounding the boards. Amber Hall and Gena Pelz were able to dominate our players. Washington is a great team and we let this game slip away from us. We cannot keep giving games away."
Arizona Forward Adia Barnes
On a tough shooting night: "It was just me rushing and not taking my time. I was thinking too much about my lay ups and they weren't going in. I don't think it was the defense, they just weren't falling. As a team it was a great comeback but we didn't do little things down the stretch. We know we didn't play particularly well, but we'll bounce back."
On the play of UW: "You can tell they really wanted the game. We got outhustled on long rebounds and we didn't have the fire in our eyes like we usually had. Like what we had when we played them back home. They hit some threes down the stretch and we would do some good things and they would come back with two threes. We could have played better overall. We knew coming in to keep them off the boards and we didn't do so: they got second shots."
