Garthwaite Named Pac-10 Player Of The Week

March 19, 2002
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Outfielder Jay Garthwaite has been named the Pacific-10 Conference's baseball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today.
Garthwaite, a junior from Kent, Wash. (Kent-Meridian HS), batted .538 (7-for-13) in the three-game series vs. Brigham Young last week. He hit three triples and two home runs and drove in seven runs over the three games. He also stole a base, threw a runner out on the bases and scored five runs.
The honor is the second such award for Garthwaite, who also earned Player of the Week as a freshman in 2000. The Huskies hadn't had a weekly award winner since May of 2000, when Ed Erickson won.
USC sophomore Jon Williams was named the Pitcher of the Week.
The Huskies (9-8-1) take this week off before returning to action next Monday and Tuesday in a pair of non-conference games at Washington State. Next Thursday through Saturday, March 28-30, the UW opens the Pac-10 season at Arizona State. All three of the ASU games will air live on radio on KKNW AM-1150.
