Garthwaite Named National Player Of The Week

April 2, 2002
SEATTLE - Junior center fielder Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian HS), who was named the Pac-10 Player of the Week on Monday, received another honor Tuesday when the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) named him the national player of the week.
Garthwaite batted .500 (11-for-22) during five games last week -- two at Washington State and three at Arizona State. Over those five games, he belted four home runs and drove in 16. His 16 RBI in the one week alone are more than all but one of his teammates have compiled all season.
Garthwaite has hit five home runs in his last six games and six in his last eight. His nine home runs through 23 games (with 33 to go) are already more than the seven Michael Done had to lead the Huskies last season. He's also on pace to shatter the UW runs batted in record of 73 (shared by Kevin Miller (1997) and Dominic Woody (1999)). On his current pace, Garthwaite would finish the 56-game regular season with 102.
Currently, Garthwaite leads the Pac-10 with his 42 RBI and with his .804 slugging percentage. He's also third in home runs, tied for first in triples (3) and fourth in total bases (74), despite the fact that the Huskies have played fewer games than any team in the Pac-10.
The Huskies (1-2 Pac-10, 12-10-1 overall) take on Gonzaga Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at Husky Ballpark before travelling to Columbia, Mo., this weekend for a three- game series against Missouri
