Husky Golfers in Sixth at Tight NCAA Regional

Albuquerque, NM - The 14-ranked Washington men's golf team is in sixth place after the opening round of the NCAA West Regional Championship played at New Mexico's Championship Course. The Huskies shot 3-over 291 during their first-round of the 54-hole event. The top 10 teams from the tournament will advance to the NCAA Championships May 30-June 2 at Ohio State.
Texas leads a tightly-bunch field of 27 teams at 3-under 285. San Diego State is second at 289 and three teams, Fresno State, Minnesota and UNLV, are tied for third at 290. Just 10 strokes separate the second and 15th-place teams.
The Huskies were led by sophomore Brock Mackenzie and Dan Potter who both carded rounds of even par 72. Classmate Corey Prugh shot 1-over 73, junior John Robertson was 2-over 74 and Conner Robbins finished at 88. Mackenzie, Robertson and Prugh all recorded a birdie on their final holes to put the Huskies into contention for an NCAA berth.
Texas' Jason Hartwick stands atop the leaderboard with an opening score of 4-under 68. Mackenzie and Potter and tied for 18 while Prugh is 27th.
The second round of play takes place Friday and the tournament concludes Saturday.
In the other NCAA Regional championships, Clemson leads the East with an opening score of 2-under 286 while host Georgia Tech is second at 291. In the Central Regional, Oklahoma State holds a two stoke lead over Kansas, Oklahoma and TCU at 287.
