The 14-ranked Washington men's golf team moved up three spots to third place after 36 holes of play at the NCAA West Regional at New Mexico's Championship Course. The Huskies need to finish in the top 10 of the event to advance to the NCAA Championships May 30-June 2 at Ohio State. The final round is scheduled for Saturday.
Only nine strokes separate the top 11 teams in the tournament after two days of play.
Washington shot 293 on Friday for a two-day total of 8-over 584. UNLV leads the field at 582 while Fresno State is second at 583. Pacific and Pepperdine are currently tied for 10th at 589.
The Huskies were led Friday by junior Conner Robbins (Bremerton) who turned in a career best score of 67. That tied Arizona's Ricky Barnes, the tournament leader, for the low round at the event. Robbins score was 21 strokes better than his first round effort, that included a 10 on one par 4. Robbins round included eight birdies and three bogies. All of his birdies came over a stretch of 11 holes.
"I was impressed that Conner came back with that type of effort," said Husky coach Matt Thurmond. "This tournament is so tight, that effort really kept us in it today. This course is playing really hard and there are a lot of really good teams here. Our guys are just doing a great job of hanging around. I'm excited that we are just two strokes out of the lead, but you have to keep in mind that we are just five strokes from 10th place."
The Huskies Dan Potter (Coeur d'Alene) is 22nd overall at 146 after shooting 74 on Friday. Brock Mackenzie (Yakima) carded a 76 to fall back to 36th at 148. John Robertson (Olympia) is 60th at 150 while Corey Prugh (Spokane) is 97th at 154. Despite his impressive round. Robbins only moved up to 105 with a 36-hole score of 155.
Barnes owns a five-shot lead for medalist honors at 137. Four players are tied for second at 142.
