Six Huskies Picked On Baseball Draft's Day One

SEATTLE - Six University of Washington baseball players were selected on the first day of the Major League baseball draft today, and one other Husky -- senior Michael Done -- signed a contract with Baltimore prior to the draft.
Junior outfielder Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale) was the first Husky player selected. He was picked in the eighth round (237th pick) by the New York Mets. Davidson batted .339 this season and led the team with 85 hits, 62 runs and 18 doubles. He also belted 15 homers, second on the team.
Junior Tila Reynolds, a shorstop from Renton (Liberty High), was selected by Milwaukee in the 13th round (379th overall). Reynolds, known for his defense, also led the team with his .347 average and 19 stolen bases.
Outfielder Jay Garthwaite, a junior from Kent (Kent-Meridian), was the 14th-round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks (429th overall). Garthwaite, who's bottom-of-the-ninth homer at Rice in NCAA Regional play was the highlight of the season, led the team with 16 homers and 64 RBI while batting .320.
First baseman Bryan Johnson, a junior from Ephrata, Wash., was selected by Arizona in the 16th round (489 overall). Johnson hit .255 with seven homers in 2002. Junior reliever Tyler Shepple (Arvada, Colo.) was taken in the 20th round (589th overall) by Milwaukee after leading the Huskies with six saves this season.
Shawn Kohn, who tied the Husky record with 11 wins in 2002, was picked by Oakland in the 22nd round (668), the last round of the first day. The senior right-hander from Woodinville, finished with a 3.22 ERA and nine complete games.
Done, a third baseman from Littleton, Colo., signed with the Orioles Monday night as Baltimore still owned his draft rights after selecting him in the 40th round last year. Done batted .277 as a senior, hitting 11 home runs.
The draft continues tomorrow as rounds 23 through 50 will take place.
