THIS WEEK: The Washington baseball team (10-23 overall, 2-7 Pac-10) enters the second half of a seven-game stretch of home games this week as the Dawgs play host to Seattle University and USC. Tuesday, the Redhawks (14-15) visit for a 5:00 p.m. game at Husky Balllpark, the fourth of four scheduled meetings between the crosstown foes this year. This this Thursday through Saturday (moved up due to Easter), the Trojans (15-20, 6-6 Pac-10) come to Seattle, fresh from a sweep over Oregon last weekend in L.A. All four games will air live on radio (KKNW AM-1150) in the Puget Sound area. Fans can also watch live video and follow live stats at GoHuskies.com. As always, go to the front page of GoHuskies.com and click on the "Calendar" tab to find those links. Freshman right-hander Jeff Brigham, who also started last Tuesday's 11-0 win at SeattleU, will take the mound for the Huskies on Tuesday, squaring off against the Redhawks' Seafth Howe. The weekend's starting rotation has yet to be determined. After the USC series and Easter Sunday, the Dawgs will spend the following week in Eastern Washington with two games at Gonzaga next Monday and Tuesday followed by a series at WSU April 29 through May 1. Here's a look at this week's games:
Tuesday, April 19: SeattleU at UW, 5:00 p.m. PT - KKNW AM-1150
Thursday, April 21: USC at UW, 6:00 p.m. PT - KKNW AM-1150
Friday, April 22: USC at UW, 6:00 p.m. PT - KKNW AM-1150
Saturday, April 23: USC at UW, 12:00 p.m. PT - KKNW AM-1150
COACH MEGGS: Lindsay Meggs was named the Huskies' head coach in July of 2009, just the third different UW head coach in 34 years. In 2010, his first season in charge, he improved the Huskies' season record by five wins over the previous year, going 28-28 against a schedule ranked as high as third-toughest in the nation. Meggs came to the UW after having spent the previous three seasons at Indiana State and the 13 prior to that at Chico State, where he won NCAA Division II national championships in 1997 and 1999. He helped Chico to the D-II College World Series seven times and won the league eight times. At Indiana State, he was named Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 2009 after guiding the Sycamores to a second-place finish, their highest since 1998. Currently, he boasts a 653-358-4 record over 17 seasons as a four-year college head coach. He'd previously served as head coach at Long Beach City College and Oxnard College. Born in San Jose and a graduate of Saratoga (Calif.) High, Meggs played four seasons as the starting third baseman at UCLA. He was drafted by the Brewers in 1983, and then again by the Royals after his senior year in 1984. Meggs is joined by assistant coaches Dave Nakama, Dave Dangler and Jordon Twohig.
SERIES HISTORY: Washington has a long history vs. Seattle University, but until last season, when the Redhawks' baseball program was revived, the two Seattle-based programs hadn't played since 1986. This year, SeattleU has won two of three, winning 4-2 and 6-4 in 10 innings at Husky Ballpark, while the UW won, 11-0, last Tuesday at SU. USC holds a 32-21 record in its all-time series vs. Washington. However, dating back to 1996, the Huskies are 22-17 against the Trojans. Last year in the season's final weekend, the Trojans won two out of three (losing the first and winning the last two). Prior to last season, Washington had swept the last two series, in 2009 in Seattle and in 2008 in L.A.
ANOTHER TOUGH SCHEDULE: Each year, Washington boasts one of the toughest schedules in the season, if only by virtue of playing the rigorous Pac-10 Conference. According to well-regarded college baseball website, boydsworld.com, the Huskies have the eighth-toughest schedule in the country, though all of the Pac-10's team rank highly. The Huskies, of course, face the nine other Pac-10 teams. Six Pac-10 teams (Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA) were ranked in either the Baseball America and USA Today coaches' preseason polls, or both. Oregon State and Washington State also each also received votes in the coaches' poll. Additionally, the Huskies traveled to Cal State Fullerton for a three-game series at Husky Ballpark. The Titans were ranked in the top 10 in both polls.
WHERE ARE THEY FROM?: Washington's baseball roster has traditionally been heavily dominated by in-state players. The 2011 team is much more diverse than what had been the norm for many years as, of the 35 players, nine players completed their high school career in a state other than Washington (generally over the past few decades, that number has averaged closer to two or three out-of-state players). So, 26 Huskies come from in-state while there are six from California and one each from Minnesota, Indiana and Utah. Of the 26 players from the Evergreen State, 25 come from west of the Cascades, (the western half of the state).
