GOLD RIVER, Calif. - From walk-on to U-23 world champion and team captain, Kerry Simmonds has had an impressive journey at Washington. Now the senior can add All-Pac-10 rower to her growing resume.
The San Diego native was the Huskies' lone mention on the conference's annual list, but certainly was a worthwhile candidate. Simmonds has rowed in UW's varsity eight all season, in addition to captaining the squad. This summer she'll head back to U-23 camp for the opportunity to row at the U-23 world championships in Amsterdam.
Washington women's coach and rowing director Bob Ernst felt Simmonds was an easy choice to represent the Huskies on the prestigious list, based on her leadership this season in combination with her talents.
"She was cast into the role by the kids on the team," Ernst said. "She's done a nice job with all that. Our team is shy on seniors, and Kerry has done a good job of filling that void. It's a good bridge for her getting her degree and moving on to the national team."
Simmonds has built on her success from last season, which saw her compete regularly with the varsity. In the summer of 2010, she was selected to row with the USRowing U-23 eight, winning a gold medal at the U-23 World Championships in Brest, Belarus. Simmonds is the second straight former walk-on to receive a Pac-10 selection. Last year, Adrienne Martelli - who was also the 2010 captain - was named to the All-Pac-10 team.
Members of the All-Conference rowing teams are based upon each institution's finish in the varsity eight championship race at the Pac-10 Championships. Conference champion provides four members of the All-Conference team, the Pac-10 second-place crew provides three members, and the Pac-10 third-place finisher provides two. All other participating Conference crews receive one selection each.
