Jimmy Gabriel rejoined the Husky men's soccer staff in 2008 as a volunteer assistant coach after serving as a full-time assistant for head coach Dean Wurzberger from 1997-2002. After three seasons, Gabriel left the Huskies in the spring of 2011.
During Gabriel's tenure with the Huskies, he helped them to three-straight conference championships including the 1998 and 1999 MPSF titles and the inaugural Pac-10 crown in 2000. He was also instrumental in coordinating the Huskies' overseas trip to England for the 2001 preseason, the first of its kind for a UW soccer team.
A legend in his own right, Gabriel's playing and coaching career spans nearly 50 years.
A native of Dundee, Scotland, Gabriel began what would become a 20-year playing career when he was 16 with a three-year stint with Dundee in the Scottish Premier League. He left Dundee in 1960 to play with Everton of the English Premier League, an eight-year tenure that was highlighted by winning the FA Cup in 1966. He was also a member of Scotland's national team.
Gabriel played for a number of English teams before his career brought him to Seattle in the 1970's, where he played for and coached the Seattle Sounders for seven years. During that period, Gabriel served as a head coach to Wurzberger. He then was the head coach of the San Jose Earthquakes for one outdoor season and two indoor seasons.
Gabriel coached in England from 1986-1997 and then returned to Seattle where he served as the coaching director for the Washington State Youth Soccer Association. He also worked in certification with the State Coaches Association.
Gabriel went back to the Sounders, serving as an assistant coach for the squad's 2008 season. He and his wife, Pat, reside in Kirkland.
