SAAS PURPOSE STATEMENT
SAAS empowers student-athletes to pursue excellence in school, sport, and life. We work with student-athletes to do this by:

ACADEMIC SERVICES
Every sport is assigned an academic team to support each student-athlete so that they may reach their full potential as an individual. The SAAS staff works closely with coaches, faculty, and student services personnel to help student-athletes better balance the demands of academics and athletics.
ACADEMIC ADVISORS
SAAS has seven academic advisors who provide guidance with all aspects of educational planning, from freshman orientation through graduation. This includes developing quarterly class schedules, major application, degree and graduation planning, and career exploration and development. In addition, they guide student-athletes in becoming active and independent learners in order to help them achieve their academic goals at the University of Washington. They also monitor academic progress for University and NCAA requirements.
ACADEMIC COORDINATORS
Academic Coordinators work together with the academic support team to help student-athletes achieve their academic goals at the University of Washington. The academic coordinator works with a caseload of student-athletes to develop individualized learning plans and to track and monitor their academic progress. Coordinators meet regularly with assigned students and develop time management skills, academic goal setting, and study and organizational skills.
LEARNING SPECIALISTS
SAAS has five learning specialists who work one-on-one with student-athletes to create individualized learning plans for academic success. Learning specialists help students figure out what resources work best for them, how to access those resources, and how to optimize the various learning opportunities UW provides. Additionally, the Learning Resources team works closely with UW’s Disability Resources for Students (DRS) to see if students qualify for additional academic accommodations due to issues with learning, mental health, and/or physical injuries.
TUTORIAL SUPPORT
Our department offers scheduled and drop-in tutoring for several high-demand introductory level courses. Our tutors consist of teaching assistants, graduate students, undergraduate upperclassmen, and professionals in the community. In addition to drop-in tutoring, we also offer exam review sessions for specific subjects.
For the 2026-2027 academic year, tutors are paid $23.78 - $24.66. These wages are increased on an annual basis or as required per UAW4121 union contract.
EMERGING PROFESSIONALS PROGRAM
The Emerging Professionals Program provides comprehensive training, education, and experience to SAAS assistants to prepare for full-time roles in student-athlete support services. Our program offers two different tracks: Assistant Academic Coordinators and Assistant Learning Specialists that work closely with the full-time staff in that subunit.
