Jeff Bechthold joined the Washington athletic department as a member of the sports information staff in December of 1991. He is the longest-tenured SID in the Big Ten Conference and has spent more time at his current school than any other active, Power-4 college football communications director in the country.
Since arriving on Montlake, he's served as the primary communications contact for the men's soccer, women's soccer, men's golf, women's golf, volleyball, baseball, gymnastics, rowing and football teams. He's been in charge of football since 2000 and has worked with the rowing team since the 2015 season. Entering the 2026 season, he's attended 322 consecutive UW football games (home, road and neutral).
Bechthold was born in Livonia, Mich., grew up in Mission Hills, Kansas, and graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School. From there, he went to the University of Southern California, earning a bachelor's degree in sports information in 1990.
After graduation, he worked as an intern at the Pac-10 Conference and Stanford before landing a job at Washington.
Bechthold married his wife, UW alumna Meghan, in 2004. They have two daughters, Emelia and Adalaide.
