SEATTLE - The Washington State volleyball team handed Washington a 3-0 loss Friday night before a capacity crowd at the Pavilion Addition, sweeping the two-match season series for the first time since Pac-10 play began 14 seasons ago. Game scores were 15-11, 15-12, 15-10.
With the victory, the Cougars improved to 13-11 overall and 7-9 in the Pac-10. Washington dropped to 8-16 and 4-12. Earlier this season, the Cougars beat the Huskies 3-2 in Pullman. Since the Pac-10 standardized play in 1986 with a home match at each school each season, Washington had managed to at least split the two matches every season.
Friday, the Cougars were led by 20 kills and a .447 hitting percentage from senior Joy Sperry. Adrian Hankoff chipped in with 19 kills and LaToya Harris had 18 for WSU. Melissa Wright also reached double-figures -- rare for a setter -- with 10.
Washington got 17 kills from sophomore Lisa Underhill. Senior Kristina Laffling, playing despite a sprained ankle suffered last Saturday, notched 16 kills and led her side with four blocks in her final home appearance as a Husky.
The Huskies close out the season next weekend when they travel to play Stanford and California.
