NORMAL, Ill. - The Washington volleyball team, despite a 19-kill performance from senior Kristina Laffling, lost 3-1 Friday to Rhode Island at the Illinois State Tournament. Game scores were 13-15, 15-6, 15-7, and 15-11.
The Huskies dropped to 1-1 on the season after having beaten Illinois-Chicago on Wednesday. Rhode Island, which lost earlier Friday to Wisconsin, improved to 1-2.
Laffling, an All-Pac-10 first-teamer last year, had only one error to go with her 19 kills for an outstanding .462 hitting percentage, but it wasn't enough for Washington, which hit only .169 as a team. Rhode Island, led by Christie Wilson's 21 kills, hit .286.
The Huskies, usually one of the nation's top blocking teams, managed only eight in the four games, about half their usual average. The Rams also out-performed the Huskies on defense, posting 64 digs to the Huskies' 48.
Junior Emily Seacat was the only other Husky in double figures in kills with 10.
Saturday, the Huskies conclude play in the Illinois State Classic as they take on the host Redbirds and ninth-ranked Wisconsin.
