SEATTLE -- The 14th-ranked Washington volleyball team (20-8) was selected as the 12th seed in the 2003 Division I Women's Volleyball Championships and will host the first and second rounds Dec. 5-6 at the Bank of America Arena. The Huskies, who are making their second straight NCAA appearance and eighth overall, will face Northwestern (18-14) in the first round on Dec. 5, while 13th-ranked Santa Clara (20-10) will play Utah (20-8). The winners of the first round matches will meet in the second round on Dec. 6.
The Huskies were one of 33 teams to receive an at-large bid and join 31 automatic qualifiers to make up the 64-team field. Northwestern, Santa Clara and Utah also received at-large berths.
Washington is one of six Pacific-10 teams to receive a postseason bid, including No. 1 seed Southern California, No. 6 seed Stanford, No. 8 seed UCLA, No. 10 seed California and Arizona.
Last season, the Huskies made their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1997 and defeated Colorado State in the first round before falling to Hawaii. Washington's best NCAA finish came in 1997 when the Huskies advanced to the Sweet 16.
