Los Angeles - The No. 21 Washington Husky women gymnastics team (8-4) fell to the No. 5 UCLA Bruins today at Pauley Pavillion 196.575- 192.600. It was the Huskies' second meet in three days, and fatigue was a factor for Washington, who counted four falls in the loss. UCLA's three former Olympians, Kate Richardson, Kristen Maloney and Tasha Schwikert, swept the meet for the Bruins, placing in the top three spots on bars, beam and floor. Washington's Tacia LaBatte was the only Husky to crack the top three on any event, tying for third on vault (9.850) with UCLA's Jordan Schwikert.
Washington had a rocky start on the uneven bars, suffering two falls and counting one towards their season-low 47.950 team score. Carly Dockendorf anchored the team with her 9.775, along with a strong 9.700 from Tacia LaBatte. UCLA did not count a vault score below 9.700 on their first event, scoring a 49.175 to hold a formidable 1.225 lead going into the second rotation. Kate Richardson won the vault for the Bruins with a 9.950, followed closely by Kristen Maloney's 9.925.
The Huskies bounced back on vault, anchored by season-high scores from Tacia LaBatte (9.850) and Carly Dockendorf (9.825). The Huskies scored a 48.650 on the event. UCLA started its bars set with an uncharacteristic fall from Christy Tedmon, but recovered well. Richardson won her second event of the evening with a 9.850, followed by freshman Tasha Schwikert (9.825) and Maloney (9.800). UCLA's 48.950 brought their lead to 1.500 going into the third rotation.
Brittany Brabec started the Huskies off strong on floor with a 9.625, but uncharacteristic falls from Chelsea Bakken and Raimey Iselin forced the Huskies to count yet another fall towards their 47.950 team score. Dockendorf led the Huskies once again with a 9.825. The score was the second-lowest floor outing of the season for Washington. UCLA continued to roll on the balance beam, scoring a 48.975. Maloney (9.950), Richardson (9.900) and Schwikert (9.825) again led the Bruins on the event, as UCLA widened their lead to an insurmountable 2.525. UCLA led Washington 147.100-144.575 going into the last rotation.
Brabec started off the Huskies strong again on the balance beam, scoring a solid 9.750, followed by a 9.650 from Julie Medeiros. Washington then suffered four inconsistent routines, including two falls en route to a 48.025 team score. UCLA rocked their last event, floor exercise, scoring a 49.475.
Washington returns to action on Friday, Feb. 18 against the California Golden Bears at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif at 7:30 p.m.
