Head Coach Tia Jackson:
General Statement:
"Pepperdine is a very good team; just coming off a win over UCLA. Returning all of their players from last year. Did we expect it to be as big of a deficit as it was? Absolutely not. We had some defensive breakdowns which continues to be a problem for us. But we're going to get better. They had some players make some really really good plays. Number twenty-two came in and did a phenomenal job for them. We were trying to make her do some more things off the dribble. We didn't end up doing that, which caused some problems for us. She got hot from all over the floor. When that happens, it's really hard to put a lid on the basket at that point. We've got to turn around and take on Boise State. We're going take this loss and learn from it."On Daphanie Kennedy: "They call it being in the zone. And once you're in the zone it's really tough to get out of it. They have really good balance scoring. They average about seventyfive points a game and it's split down the gut. [Kennedy] was their leading scorer with almost twenty points a game. We're going to try and let her get hers but just in a variety of ways. We definitely didn't want her to get hot from outside as quickly as she did. We wanted to double down inside and take those looks away from the post players. Unfortunately when Kennedy got hot she got very very hot."
On the Huskies' offense: "We got Laura some looks early, unfortunately she got into foul trouble. Quickly. We knew that their post players were going to try to block shots. Laura's our best finisher down on the block. She is our best finisher around the rim. And if we tried to go inside, when we did that, she was scoring."
On Jess McCormack: "She's only practiced about ten minutes, so that's how much time I said I was going to play her. If you show me you can give me ten minutes in practice I'll show you I can give you ten minutes on the floor. I don't want her first game back to be full blow against Ohio State. I had to get her some minutes so she could get back into the basketball flow of the game. And she did....She did everything I asked her to do. She was owning the block."
On the Huskies' defense: "We did the right thing on the defensive end when we were double-teaming. They were turning it over, they were traveling. We were getting our hands on it and looking to create some opportunities for us on the other end. But we didn't sustain."
On Pepperdine: "They were better all around."
Freshman Katelan Redmon
On Daphanie Kennedy: "She played very well tonight. She came out and did about everything. She hit threes, pull-up jumpers, she took it all the way to the rim. She had a very nice game. We were going to try and get her to drive more. I don't know how many threes she hit, but she hit the first three of the game. We needed to force her to drive a lot more than we did." On coming back from the loss: "We can bounce back. We just need to pick up our defense a little bit more but we'll be fine."
On the Huskies' defense: "We were just a little bit slow. Like Coach said on our double-teams. We know their personnel so we know who's the driver, who's the shooter. When we get out on the court we need to know who we have and what we need to force them to do."
On the Huskies' defense: "We try to stay up. You can tell that we're trying to stay in the game, trying to keep going. But sometimes it does get hard and we try our best to keep going and keep fighting back in."
Senior Emily Florence
On Daphanie Kennedy:
"Very frustrating. A few times I just wanted to guard her so bad but we were mixing it up with the zone and man so we didn't know who would end up on her. She's a really good player. I think she'll get us ready for the Pac-10 because we're going to see guards like that all the time. We struggled a little bit tonight with her. But I thin that's about being a young team, we need to communicate a bit better. We need to stop her, there's no way she should have gotten 33 points."On the Huskies' defense: "At halftime we talked about making adjustments like that. We knew that we didn't want to give her threes anymore. For some reason, in the second half, we came out and let her have a three right away. It's really frustrating because that was something we talked about. Because we are an inexperienced team, we struggled in that area and we're going to have to work on that in practice this week a lot."
On the Huskies' offense: "We weren't hitting a lot of our shots. They weren't falling for us. I think a big difference between this game and the past is that when we weren't getting our shots before, we would get second and third rebounds and other opportunities. Tonight we would miss a shot and get back on defense because they had some really good post players. We didn't get as many looks as I thought we should have."
