UW Strong On Rain Shortened Regional Opener

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Husky women's tennis team had a solid first day at the ITA Northwest Regionals at Stanford's Taube Tennis Center, however the Bay Area weather was not quite up to the challenge, and much of the first day was postponed. Top-seed Denise Dy moved through in singles, as did senior Lina Xu.
Dy, the defending champion, had a first round bye and then opened up with a 6-2, 7-6 (6) win over Stanford's Veronica Li. Xu joins her in the third round after wins over Elizabeth Ecker of Stanford in the first round, 6-2, 6-2, and a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Lacey Pflibsen of Portland in her next match.
Junior Samantha Smith won her opener, 6-4, 6-2 over Julia Wartenburger of San Francisco, but was unable to get in her second round match. Second-seeded senior Venise Chan had a first round bye and then had her second round match pushed back as well.
Freshman Andjela Nemcevic had a straight set win over Portland's Julie Hansen in the first round before falling to 16th-seeded Nicole Gibbs of Stanford in round two. Senior Vanja Radunovic also got a see-saw win over Sidney Brady of UC Davis, 6-0, 1-6, 6-2. But Radunovic fell to Washington State's Olga Musilovich, 6-2, 6-1, in the second round.
In doubles play, Nemcevic and Smith, and Xu and Radunovic came through with big first round wins in the only two UW doubles matches squeezed in amidst the rain.
