ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Denise Dy and Samantha Smith each came through with wins over ranked opponents today in singles as the Husky women's tennis team wrapped up day two of the season-opening Michigan Invitational. Dy and Venise Chan also improved to 2-0 on the weekend at the No. 1 doubles spot.
In the four-team round robin, Washington was matched up against 13th-ranked Tennessee in the morning for singles play, then faced 8th-ranked Michigan in doubles play. The tourney is structured like a dual match, but with players earning individual points for singles and doubles wins, corresponding to their spot in the lineup.
All-Americans Chan and Dy switched spots from yesterday's singles play, with the 55th-ranked Chan moving up to No. 1 and sixth-ranked Dy playing second singles. Chan dropped a three-setter against 20th-ranked Brynn Boren of Tennessee, 6-1, 1-6, 6-1. Dy got the win over 87th-ranked Rosalia Alda, 6-1, 7-6 (5).
Smith had an impressive win at the No. 3 singles spot. The L.A. native upset 116th-ranked Maria Sobello, pulling away in the third set, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 for her second win over a ranked opponent in her last three matches dating back to the end of the fall.
Freshman Andjela Nemcevic lost a heartbreaker at No. 4 singles. After taking the first set, 6-3, over Kata Szekely, she lost the second, 6-1, but battled to a third set tiebreaker, which Szekeley took, 7-4.
In doubles play, Chan and Dy rolled against Michigan's top team of Whitney Taney and Rika Tatsuno, winning 8-2. With two wins at the No.1 doubles spot, Chan and Dy currently lead the doubles standings with 16 points. Michigan earned 8-2 wins of its own, however, at second and third doubles.
The tournament wraps up tomorrow, as the Huskies play singles against 16th-ranked Georgia Tech in the morning, and then face Tennessee in doubles play.
