PROVO, Utah. - Winning on the road is something the Husky women's tennis team will hope to make a habit this season, so no better way to start their 2011 season than with a victory on a ranked opponent's home turf. The 23rd-ranked Huskies defeated 73rd-ranked BYU by a 5-2 margin today at the BYU Indoor Tennis Courts, moving to 1-0 on the new season. Ten of Washington's first 12 matches will be on the road.
All-Americans Venise Chan and Denise Dy each posted straight set singles wins and teamed up for a dominant doubles win over a ranked Cougars tandem. After winning the Michigan Invitational doubles title last week in Ann Arbor, the Husky pair continued their hot streak with an 8-1 win over 53rd-ranked Megan Price and Callie Craig, who had just gone 3-0 in their own right at a tourney last week in Memphis. Washington clinched the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead when seniors Lina Xu and Aleksandra Krsljanin held off BYU's Young and Paul, 8-6.
In singles, Chan and Dy gave the Huskies a 3-0 lead with solid singles play. Chan played in the top spot against Price, and rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 victory. The sixth-ranked Dy finished next, defeating Elle Carney, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
Freshman Andjela Nemcevic got the clinching point in her first career dual match. Nemcevic battled through two tough sets against Desiree Tran, closing out the win 7-5, 7-6. Junior Samantha Smith later added another hard-fought point at No. 3 singles, defeating Craig in a third-set super-tiebreaker, 7-5, 5-7, and 12-10 in the tiebreak.
BYU netted two points in the last two singles points. Xu dropped a 6-3, 6-3 match to Elizaveta Ezhova at No. 5, and Krsljanin dropped a 7-6, 6-3 decision to Aubrey Paul at No. 6.
The Huskies will face another road test tomorrow when they head to Salt Lake City to take on 40th-ranked Utah, starting at 10 a.m.
