PALO ALTO, Calif. - Senior Denise Dy picked up the best win of her fall campaign today in the quarterfinals of the ITA Northwest Regionals, as she knocked off 12th-ranked Stacey Tan of Stanford at the Cardinal's Taube Tennis Center. Dy is looking to win the prestigious title for the second time in her career.
It was quite a match-up for a quarterfinal at Regionals, as UW's two-time All-American went against last year's NCAA Singles runner-up in Tan on her home courts. But Dy, ranked fourth nationally, made quick work of Tan, 6-2, 6-2, for her first win over a Top-20 opponent this fall. She will need another in Monday's semifinal, as she goes against 17th-ranked Mallory Burdette of Stanford, who defeated Dy earlier this month at the ITA All-American Championships.
The Northwest Regional is one of the toughest in the nation on the women's side. The other semifinal on Monday pits the defending NCAA Singles Champion and current No. 1-ranked player, Jana Juricova of Cal, against seventh-ranked Nicole Gibbs of Stanford. Dy became the first Husky to win the title in 2009.
In doubles action, senior Samantha Smith and sophomore Andjela Nemcevic knocked off a pair of seeded Cougars to make the quarterfinals. The Husky pair beat seventh-seeded Vasilieva and Luzina, 8-5. They were unable to pull off a second upset later in the day, however, falling to California's third-seeded Goransson and Schutting, 8-4.
Freshmen Natali Coronel and Julija Lukac had their first college weekends come to a close in the doubles round of 16, falling to sixth-seeded Frampton and Jullien of St. Mary's, 8-5.
Dy and Burdette's semifinal match can be watched live on GoStanford.com at 11 a.m. Monday.
