Huskies Drop National Indoor Opener To No. 4 UNC

CHALOTTESVILLE, Va. - Making its first appearance in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships since 2005, the Husky women's tennis team got a pair of stellar victories from its All-American duo of Denise Dy and Venise Chan, but fourth-ranked North Carolina proved too tough down the lineup, and handed the Huskies a 4-2 defeat in the first round.
The Tar Heels, runners-up in this event a year ago, won the doubles point and quickly built a 3-0 lead with straight set victories at No. 3 and No. 6 singles.
Washington responded with points at the top of the lineup from the dynamic Chan and Dy duo. At No. 1 singles, sixth-ranked Dy handled 13th-ranked Zoe De Bruycker, 6-2, 6-2. And at the No. 2 spot, 26th-ranked Chan rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 win against No. 75 Shinann Featherston. The pair are both 9-0 in dual singles matches now this year.
But North Carolina ended the match at No. 4 singles, where Gina Suarez-Malaguti overcame freshman Andjela Nemcevic, 6-3, 6-1.
The Huskies continued to have a tough time in doubles away from the No. 1 court. Nemcevic and Aleksandra Krsljanin lost 8-0 at No. 3 doubles, then Samantha Smith and Adrijana Pavlovic fell 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. That meant Chan and Dy, ranked ninth nationally as a tandem, were unable to finish an enticing match-up against sixth-ranked Featherston and McHale at the top spot, as they were down 3-4 when the point was clinched.
Who Washington will face in Saturday's back draw is still pending.
