ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Lobos gave the Huskies all they could handle in game one, pushing UW to its first extra inning game of the year, but in the end, the Huskies prevailed with three runs in the top of the ninth for a 7-4 victory. The No. 5/6 Huskies improve to 14-0 on the year.
New Mexico took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second off of Husky starter, freshman Whitney Jones (Upland, Calif.). Jones pitched 2.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with one strikeout.
Freshman Kaitlin Inglesby got the Dawgs within one with her first career home run to left field to lead off the third. Junior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) kept the rally going with a two-out bunt single and scored on a double to center field by senior Jenn Salling (Port Coquitlam, B.C.).
The Lobos' Dani Castro homered to center to put UNM back on top, 3-2 in the bottom of the third.
Senior Morgan Stuart (Riverside, Calif.) tied the game in the top of the fourth, leading off the inning with her sixth home run of the season.
UW re-took the lead in the top of the fifth as Pohlman singled and scored on an error after Salling singled.
Another run came across for UNM to tie the game again at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth.
After the final two innings were blank on the run column for both teams, it went to extras.
Freshman Marki Creger-Zier (Steilacoom, Wash.) pinch hit in the top of the ninth for Taylor Smith and singled to the left side of the infield. She would score the winning run on a double to left center by Pohlman.
The Huskies added two more runs in the inning to extend the lead to three. Pohlman scored on a throwing error and Salling scored on an RBI ground out by sophomore Shawna Wright (Lancaster, Calif.).
Junior Jenna Clifton (Glendale, Ariz.) pitched 2.0 innings in relief, allowing just two hits.
Inglesby, who started the game as the designated player, got the win in the circle, improving to 8-0 the year. She allowed one run on one hit with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
The Huskies had 13 hits in the game to just nine for New Mexico.
