OJAI, Calif. - The Husky women's tennis team had a tough first day at the Pac-10 Championships at the Ojai Valley Tennis Club today, unable to advance any singles players through to the quarterfinals. Junior Samantha Smith reached the main draw second round but second-seeded Venise Chan was upset in round one.
Chan had not played singles at the Pac-10 tourney since her freshman year, and didn't have much luck in her return, as she lost to Cal's Anett Schutting, 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the first round. The loss snapped an eight-match win streak for the 14th-ranked senior.
Smith had a strong comeback win in her first round match, battling back from a 2-6 first set loss to beat Arizona State's Hannah James, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the next two sets. In the second round, Smith fought well again but fourth-seeded Nicole Gibbs of Stanford, a Top-25 player nationally, came out ahead 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Aleksandra Krsljanin lost her first match to third-seeded Kelcy McKenna of Arizona State, 6-1, 6-2. In the invitational singles draw, senior Vanja Radunovic and junior Adrijana Pavlovic both dropped their openers.
Smith and Chan will be in the main doubles draw tomorrow while Pavlovic, Krsljanin, and Radunovic will play in the invitational doubles draw.
