Tough First Day For Dawgs At Michigan Invite

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Starting off the new season on the home courts of a top-10 opponent proved to be as tough as expected for the Husky women's tennis team, which began a three-day stint at the Michigan Invitational this afternoon. In the individual tournament that follows a dual match structure, the Huskies started off with some nice wins in doubles against Georgia Tech but then struggled in singles against the host Wolverines.
Doubles came first as the Huskies went up against 13th-ranked Georgia Tech. Seniors Denise Dy and Samantha Smith teamed up to post an 8-2 victory over Tech's top team of Muriel Wacker and Christina Ngo. Georgia Tech won at second and third doubles but freshman Julija Lukac and senior Adrijana Pavlovic had another 8-2 win at the fourth spot over Elizabeth Kilborn and Lynn Blau.
In seven singles matches against the 10th-ranked Wolverines, the three returning Huskies all went three sets, but all came up short. The four freshmen had trouble getting on track today, dropping straight set matches. 10th-ranked Dy was up a set but 36th-ranked Emina Bektas came back to get the upset, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Samantha Smith went down to the wire against 46th-ranked Brooke Bolender, but fell just short in three, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Sophomore Andjela Nemcevic also took the first set at fourth singles but could not hold on.
On Sunday the Huskies will start with singles against the Yellow Jackets, and then follow that with doubles against the Arkansas Razorbacks.
