ANN ARBOR, Mich. - On the second day of the Michigan Invitational, the Husky women's tennis team continued to scrap against a top-15 opponent, but the results have yet to swing in their direction. Washington pushed four singles matches into three sets against 13th-ranked Georgia Tech, but the Yellow Jackets won the final points.
The season-opening tournament follows a dual match format but is an individual tournament in principle, so teams can get matches for their full roster. Today UW went against 13th-ranked Georgia Tech in singles at the beginning of the day, then faced 24th-ranked Arkansas in doubles play.
The day's most intriguing match pitted 10th-ranked Denise Dy against top Yellow Jacket Jillian O'Neill, ranked 45th. The match lasted two and half hours, but O'Neill wound up with the upset win thanks to a pair of tiebreaks, taking it 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (4). Dy suffered a wrist injury during the match that prevented her from returning for doubles play later in the day.
For the second day in a row, senior Samantha Smith and sophomore Andjela Nemcevic both went to third sets but did not pick up the wins. Smith fell to Caroline Lilley at the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2, and Nemcevic lost a set lead to Elizabeth Kilborn, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Natali Coronel also went to a decisive third set against Jasmine Minor at No. 5 but fell 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.
The lone win of the day came in doubles where Coronel and recently added freshman Riko Shimizu defeated Kate Lukoskaya and Catherine Parenteau of Arkansas, 8-4.
The Huskies will look to finish strong tomorrow as they play singles against Arkansas and doubles against Michigan.
