Washington Sweeps Aside Pilots, 7-0

SEATTLE - Senior Samantha Smith stepped on to the No. 1 singles court for the first time today, and posted a straight sets win to help the Husky women's tennis team shut out Portland, 7-0, at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Washington (5-1) did not drop a set in singles play.
After taking the doubles point, Head Coach Jill Hultquist decided to give senior Denise Dy a day off in singles, knowing UW will have a big battle tomorrow against 31st-ranked Texas A&M. So Smith moved up to the top spot and defeated Anastasia Polyakova, 6-4, 6-0.
The rest of the Huskies all moved up a spot in the lineup as well, and senior Adrijana Pavlovic made her first dual match start of the season at No. 6 singles. She quickly posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Gabrielle Gorence. That followed a 6-0, 6-1 win from freshman Riko Shimizu at No. 5 singles against Emily Mahairas, putting Washington up 3-0.
Sophomore Andjela Nemcevic got the clinching win at No. 2 singles, as she took out Sabine Fuchs. Up 5-4, Nemcevic broke serve to win the first set, 6-4, then rolled to a 6-1 second set win. Freshman Capucine Gregoire was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Valeska Hoath at third singles, and freshman Natali Coronel completed the sweep with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Alice Tucker at the four spot.
Paired together in doubles for the first time this season, Belgrade natives Nemcevic and freshman Julija Lukac rolled to an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles over Mahairas and Gorence. Dy and Smith then clinched the point with an 8-2 victory over Polyakova and Fuchs in the top match. Dy earned her 75th career doubles win to move into fourth on UW's career wins list.
Tomorrow brings 31st-ranked Texas A&M to the Nordstrom Tennis Center for one of UW's toughest non-conference matches of the season. The Huskies and Aggies will kick off at 11 a.m.
