USTFCCCA Honors Nine For Academic Prowess

NEW ORLEANS - Nine Huskies were named All-Academic honorees this week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, while the Husky women's track team was named an All-Academic team as a unit. The USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for individuals require a combination of strong work on the track and in the classroom.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or top 48 in a relay event during the indoor season; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
Six Husky women earned All-Academic acclaim. Junior Christine Babcock made the 1,500-meter quarterfinals outdoors and maintains a 3.93 grade point average. Junior Lindsay Flanagan ranked 26th indoors in the 5,000-meters before redshirting the outdoor season; she boasts a 3.43 GPA. Junior Justine Johnson ranked in the top-40 in the mile indoors, and has a 3.70 GPA.
Junior Sarah Schireman earns the honor for the first time, as she qualified indoors in the pentathlon while carrying a 3.29 GPA. Sophomore Kayla Stueckle qualified with a 3.46 GPA while reaching the NCAA quarterfinals in the 400m hurdles. And freshman Eleanor Fulton picks up her first honor, as she ranked in the top-96 in the mile indoors and earned a 3.81 GPA in her first year of school.
Flanagan, Johnson, and Stueckle are all repeat winners of the award.
The men were led by a trio of javelin throwers, all of whom competed at NCAA prelims. Jimmy Brookman went on to place 15th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships to earn All-America Second Team honors, and he also sports a 3.44 GPA. Junior Joe Zimmerman, the Pac-12 runner-up in the javelin, gets the award with a 3.28 GPA, as does freshman Quinn Hale, who managed a 3.45 GPA in his first year.
The Husky women's team combined for a grade point average of 3.15 through the 2012 spring quarter, easily exceeding the 3.00 GPA requirement to pick up team honors.
