Historic Round Helps UW Women's Golf Lap The Field

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The Washington women's golf team combined to shoot rounds of 3-under 285 and 8-under 280 on Monday to build a whopping 26 stroke lead heading into tomorrow's final round of the season-opening Oregon State Invitational.
"It's a fun day when everybody plays like that," Husky Coach Mary Lou Mulflur said from Corvallis.
"The thing that pleases me most is that we played better in the afternoon than we did in the morning. That is really hard to do, especially when it was in the 90's down here."
The weather in Oregon wasn't the only thing scorching on Monday. The Huskies afternoon score of 8-under 280 equaled the second-lowest round in school history.
Washington is alone under par at -11. Washington State is the next closest team at +15.
Individually, four UW competitors counting towards the team scores are in the top five, plus individual competitor Kelli Bowers is tied for fifth.

Sophomore SooBin Kim shot 71 and 70 at the par-72, 6,141 yard Trysting Tree Golf Course to take the 36-hole lead at 3-under 141. She leads her UW teammate, freshman Charlotte Thomas, by one stroke.
Sophomore Cyd Okino is tied for third at 1-under 143. She shot a second round 68 - the low round of the afternoon wave.
Sophomore Jennifer Yang shot a first round 69 and followed up with a 75 in the afternoon. She is tied for fifth at even par.
Freshman Ying Luo shot an 80 in the morning but rebounded with a 2-under 70 in the afternoon. She is tied for 23rd at +6.
Mulflur's message to her team was simple: "Do what you did today," she told them.
"We need to just keep it simple and remember how we played today."
The Huskies also have three golfers competing as individuals.
Bowers shot 73-71 and is tied for fifth. Redshirt freshman Monica Huang shot 75-73 in her Husky debut and is tied for 16th at 4-over. Senior Brittany Tallman shot 77 and 78 and is tied for 51st.
