Moberg, Huskies Sink Beavers In Pac-12 Opener

SEATTLE - Welcome to the Pac-12 James Moberg. The Windsor, Calif., freshman scored the game-winner in the Pac-12 opener vs. Oregon State on Sunday night in Seattle.
Moberg connected with junior Michael Harris (Shoreline, Wash.) to get a head on the flip throw-in pass on the right side of the box in the 10th minute. It is the first career goal for Moberg and third assist for Harris.
When asked about his first career goal, Moberg said, "It was exhilarating. I've had a couple of assists but it was my first goal so it felt good. The first half we were good both offensively and defensively. In the second half they started pushing back but we locked down and played well."
With the win, the Huskies improve to 6-3-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the Pac-12. Oregon State is 5-3-1 and 0-1-1.
"It was a tight game," said head coach Jamie Clark. "I thought we maybe had a chance to get a second, but they didn't get many chances at goal so it was a good 1-0 win. Patrick Pacheco was very good for us in the midfield, he controlled the game. It was nice to see Chris Brundage back and he is a senior so you want those seniors to get the most out of their final year."
Washington held possession much of the game taking 14 total shots, seven on frame. Oregon State's chances came on scrambles in the box and in flurries. The Beavers took seven total shots, three on goal.
Senior Quinton Beasley (Camas, Wash.) nearly netted the second Husky goal of the game in the 55th minute off of another beautiful Harris flip throw. Beasley's shot hit the crossbar.
Fellow seniors Patrick Pacheco (Taos, N.M.) and Abdul Aman (Seattle, Wash.) each had great shots in the 60th minute but the OSU keeper got his fingertips on each shot to make the saves. Aman took a team-high five shots, three on goal.
Spencer Richey, the UW junior goalkeeper from Seattle, Wash., made two saves in the game and picked up his fifth shutout in 10 games on the season.
"Last year we started with OSU and came out flat so wanted to make sure we came out strong in both halves," said Richey. "Our midfield and defense made it easy for me. Overall it was a good performance."
Senior Chris Brundage (Gig Harbor, Wash.) made his 2012 debut after missing the first half of the season with an injury. He earned the start on the back line. Freshman Michael Gallagher also earned the start after missing the previous two games with a concussion.
Pac-12 play continues for the Huskies as they travel to San Diego State on Oct. 5 at 7 p.m.
