SAN DIEGO - In the final game of the Campbell/Cartier Classic hosted by San Diego State on Sunday afternoon, the No. 18/16 UW softball team (6-5) closed out the weekend on a high note with an 8-0 victory in five innings over UC Riverside (2-6).
"This was a tough weekend for us," said head coach Heather Tarr. "Offense tends to be contagious and when the going gets good for this team it's going to be fun to watch. We had some great outings by our pitching staff this weekend. I am proud of how we finished this weekend."
Junior Bryana Walker (La Quinta, Calif.) allowed just one hit and struck out five in the complete game shutout. She had a perfect game going until the final inning. The first batter of the inning, Dionne Anderson, singled and was the lone base runner of the game for the Highlanders.
Sophomores Kylee Lahners (Laguna Hills, Calif.) and Kimberlee Souza (Waialua, Hawai'i) had two hits each for the UW which had 10 total.
The Huskies were held scoreless in the first inning despite loading the bases, but would score in each of the next three innings to secure the run rule.
Ashley Ercolano for UCR allowed the first five runs in the second, but all were unearned and with two outs due to a Highlander error. Senior Shawna Wright (Lancaster, Calif.) led off the inning with a single.
Wright and junior Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) scored on the error. A Hooch Fagaly (Chino, Calif.) double drove in two followed by a Lahners double that brought in the fifth run.
Marki Creger-Zier (Steilacoom, Wash.) scored the sixth run of the game in the third on a single by freshman Jennie McNeill (Simi Valley, Calif.) after reaching on a double.
In the fourth, the Huskies knocked in the final two runs on three hits. Fagaly and Lahners scored on a Souza single.
The Huskies return to Southern California next week to take part in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Feb. 21-23.
