KAPALUA, Hawai'i - SooBin Kim shot 2-under 70 on Monday to propel the Washington women's golf team to second out of 18 teams on the leaderboard after the first round of the Anuenue Spring Break Classic at Maui's Kapalua Resort.
| 2 | Washington | 287 | 287 |
| 6 | SooBin Kim (4) | 70 | 70 |
| T10 | Jennifer Yang (2) | 72 | 72 |
| T10 | Charlotte Thomas (3) | 72 | 72 |
| T18 | Ying Luo (5) | 73 | 73 |
| T24 | Cyd Okino (1) | 74 | 74 |
The 10th-rated Huskies raced out to a big lead during the early stages of the first round thanks to a stellar start from Kim and fellow sophomore Jennifer Yang. But, as the winds picked up on the course, the team's score came crashing back to the rest of the field.
Ultimately the team shot 1-under 287 to end the day two strokes behind Pepperdine. The Waves and the Huskies were the only two teams to finish under par at the 6,036-yard, par-72 Bay Course.
"It was a 7:45 shotgun start, so it started with really benign winds, so it was good that we took advantage when there was no wind," Husky Coach Mary Lou Mulflur said from Maui.
"I wasn't surprised there were a lot of birdies, but when the wind picks up, it gets tougher."
Arizona State is third after shooting 289 (+1). San Jose State and Stanford are tied for fourth after shooting 6-over 294.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament began with Kim on the second tee box. She would birdie four of the first six holes and was -4 after 10 holes. Three-straight bogeys on No.'s 12-14 brought her crashing back to earth, but she would go on to birdie No.'s 15 and 18, plus bogey 17 to finish 2-under.
Kim is sixth out of 95 competitors.
Noemi Jimenez of Arizona State and Grace Na of Pepperdine share the lead after shooting 5-under 67.
Yang got off to a blistering start with four-consecutive birdies on holes 1-4, but a bogey on No. 5 started a drought that was hard to shake. She would bogey three more holes to fall back to even par before a birdie on No. 15 got Yang back on track. She would immediately follow that up with a bogey on the 16th hole and would score par the rest of the way out to finish at even par.
"Obviously the way she came out was good to see," said Mulflur. "The trick is figuring out how to do it consistently and not let that 4-under get away from you."
"But, I liked the way she and SooBin fought hard. There was a couple times when they could have cashed it in, but they took care of business."
Yang is tied for 10th, a spot she shares with freshman teammate Charlotte Thomas. Thomas scored her 72 with three birdies and three bogeys mixed in on her scorecard.
Freshman Ying Luo shot 1-over 73 and is tied for 18th. She also had three birdies and two bogeys, but a double-bogey on No. 17 put her at +1.
Honolulu native Cyd Okino ended up carding a non-counting 2-over 74 and is tied for 24th. Okino was 1-under on the front nine of the course but had four bogeys and one birdie on the back.
Play picks back up Tuesday morning, with golfers beginning the second round on the same hole they started the tournament on Monday.
