NORMAN, Okla. -- Washington shot a second round score of 19-over 307 in the NCAA Women's Golf Central Region on Friday to drop from 12th to 15th in the standings as 24 teams head to a final day of action tomorrow.
The Huskies will have an uphill climb in Saturday's final round at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club if they want to be one of the eight teams that advance to the NCAA Championship, May 21-24 at the University of Georgia Golf Course. The fourth-seeded Huskies are at +25 overall, 10 shots off the cutline, which was established after two rounds at +15 by UC Davis, Texas Tech and Mississippi State.
Coach Mary Lou Mulflur was understandably disappointed after her team, which started the spring season ranked No. 1, walked off the course on Friday.
"I think we're all in shock," Mulflur said describing the team's psyche after they posted their third highest score of the season. "We had to count five double-bogeys and a triple today. That's a lot of shots to give up to a good field."
Compounding their problems, the Huskies had trouble converting birdies all day on the 6,298-yard, par-72 course to gain any ground on the leaders. SooBin Kim and Ying Luo combined to make eight of the team's nine total on the day.
Luo ended up shooting a team-best 2-over 74. The freshman walk-on was +1 through 17 holes, but doubled 18, exemplifying the kind of day it was for the Dawgs.
She did end up leading the team with five birdies, including three through her first five holes and is tied for 24th with a two-day total of 147 (+3).
"I'm excited for Ying," Mulflur said. "She played real well except for two holes."
Besides her double-bogey on 18, Luo counted a triple on No. 7.
Kim remains the highest ranked Husky on the leaderboard. The sophomore is tied for 16th with a total of 146 (+2). The first-team All-Pac-12 selection shot 73.
Second-team All-Pac-12 golfer Charlotte Thomas turned in the third best round among Huskies with a 78. The freshman was seven over through 16 holes before converting her one and only birdie of the afternoon on 17. She is tied for 82nd with a combined score of 154 (+10).
Sophomores Jennifer Yang and Cyd Okino each shot 80. Yang is tied with Thomas for 82nd with a score of 154 (+10), while Okino is tied for 97th with a total of 156 (+12).
Individually, Emily Collins of Oklahoma has a one shot lead heading into the finals. She is -7 overall (137) to lead six golfers with scores in the red.
Host Oklahoma leads the team-title chase with a two-day total of 569 (-7). The Sooners were the only squad to shoot under par on the day and lead No. 1 seed Duke by six strokes.
The Sooners and Blue Devils are the only teams under par, which is what the Huskies will have to aim to shoot on Saturday in order to get back into the running.
"We're going to have to have the round or our lives tomorrow," Mulflur said of her team's chances of making an 11th trip to the NCAA Championship. "We're going to have to shoot under par; there's just no two ways about it.
"There is no point in playing scared or being afraid. There is no tomorrow if we don't get it done."
The Huskies will tee off starting at noon central time (10 a.m. PT) when the winds traditionally start kicking up. UW will be paired with Indiana and UTSA.
