ATHENS, Ga. - Washington freshman Ying Luo shot even-par 72 in the first round of the NCAA Women's Golf Championship Monday at the University of Georgia Golf Course and is tied for 20th.
"She played really solid," Husky Coach Mary Lou Mulflur, who is accompanying Luo this week in Athens, said.
"She was nervous at first and really struggled to calm herself down, but she still managed to make a lot of pars and a beautiful birdie putt on the second hole."
Luo, who started her day on the 10th tee, drained a 30-foot, downhill putt that found the center of the cup on No. 11. Even with the great start, Mulflur estimated it took her six or seven holes to relax.
The walk-on from Shenzhan, China bogeyed 13 and 15 to put her at +1 before seemingly settling down. She immediately responded with back-to-back birdies on No.'s 17 and 18 to make the turn at -1.
Luo would make all pars the rest of the way except for a bogey on No. 7.
Nineteen golfers shot under par in day one, led by San Jose State's Regan De Guzman. She has a two stroke lead over two golfers after posting a 5-under 67.
The NCAA Championship consists of 72 holes over four days. Second round action for Luo will begin at 12:48 p.m. ET (9:48 a.m. PT) on the No. 1 tee.
