» Data Points: The Dempsey Dominates Sub-Four-Minute Miles
SEATTLE – With all the highlights from the Husky Classic, it was tough for junior Izaic Yorks to miss out on the fun, as the All-American miler was tripped and knocked out of the fast heat of the mile yesterday, a race that produced the top time in the NCAA this year. But Yorks did not have to wait a full twenty-four hours for a chance at redemption, entering into the UW Open today, and he made the most of the redo, speeding around the Dempsey to break the four-minute mark for the second time in his career.
Yorks ran behind a pace-setter for the first couple laps, but then took over and ran solo the rest of the way as fans and his teammates lined the track to cheer him on. The Lakewood, Wash. native stopped the clock in a time of 3:58.69, a career-best, ahead of the 3:59.04 he posted one year ago. Yorks passes Eric Garner for third on the UW top-10 list, and moves into the top-20 nationally.
“I told Coach Metcalf every day's a new opportunity,” said Yorks. “To be able to go do that after getting a little banged up (yesterday) I'm happy with that. It's not the record, but considering everything I'm happy with today.”
A smaller group of Dawgs saw action today in the Open, but there were still a number of impressive performances to cap a fantastic three days of action in the Dempsey.
Freshman Onyie Chibuogwu continues to make rapid improvement in the women's weight throw. After setting a PR by three feet on Friday, the Shoreline native added four more feet today with a toss of 57-10 ½, which puts her all the way up to No. 2 on the UW top-10 list.
One day after running a lifetime-best 7.84 in the 60m hurdles, junior Chris Williams cleared a lifetime-best in the pole vault, going 17-5 ½ on a third attempt to tie Jax Thoirs for the win. Williams becomes the fourth Husky vaulter to go 17-5 this year, as Thoirs, J.J. Juilfs, and Lev Marcus have all cleared that height now.
In the women's pole vault, sophomore Elizabeth Quick bumped her PR up to 13-6 ¼, tying her teammate Kristina Owsinski for seventh on the top-10 list. Owsinski cleared 13-0 ¼ herself today. Also in the vault, Jessica Goodkin, Aleksei Dingel, and Kaitlin Zinsli all cleared 12-0 ½.
Maurice McNeal and Quadelle Satterwhite went 1-2 in the 400-meters, with McNeal running 48.07 and Satterwhite a 48.48. Freshman Danica Person posted a big 60m dash PR of 7.87 seconds. Blake Nelson had an 800m PR of 1:53.13 and Kyle Blume posted a 1:54.23. Howard Lao won the 60m hurdles competing unattached in 8.20 and freshman Eric Simpson was second in a PR of 8.39. Junior Kimberly Stueckle was second in the women's 60m hurdles in 8.69.
Junior Frank Catelli chased the 60-foot mark again in the shot put, throwing over 59-feet for the second straight day. He went 59-4 ¼ today after throwing 59-10 ½ on Saturday. Senior Brian Hutchison also had a season-best of 53-4 ½ this afternoon. Redshirt frosh Gina Flint was second overall in the women's shot, going 46-11 on her best attempt.
Washington will now have two weeks to prep for the conference championships, the MPSF meet, set for the Dempsey on Feb. 27-28.
