
Dawgs Fall at No. 51 Houston, 4-3

HOUSTON – The 42nd-ranked University of Washington women's tennis team suffered a close 4-3 loss to the 51st ranked Houston Cougars in Texas on Saturday afternoon. The Dawgs move to 3-3 on the season and next face the Auburn Tigers on Sunday.
UW jumped ahead of Houston early in the match by taking the doubles point after wins on court three and one. Julija Lukac and Angela Chen started the day with a 6-3 win over Mina Markovic and Rocio Martin before Elianne Douglas-Miron and Riko Shimizu posted a 6-4 win over Elena Kordolaimi and Despoina Vogasari at number one doubles clinch the point for the Huskies.
The Huskies extended their lead to 2-0 after singles play started with Lukac easily handling Houston's Tina Rupert, 6-2, 6-1 at number four singles. The Cougars responded with wins on court five, two and one to take a 3-2 lead before UW's Capucine Gregoire evened it back up at 3-all with a 6-4, 6-3 victory on court six.
With the match tied at 3, it came down a three-set decision on court three as Houston's Rocio Martin edged Husky freshman Miki Kobayashi, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The Dawgs next face Auburn on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 8 a.m. PT at the John E. Hoff Courts on the University of Houston campus.
