UW Women's Tennis Falls at Utah, 4-3

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The University of Washington women's tennis team suffered its first loss in eight matches as it fell to Utah 4-3 on Sunday in Salt Lake City. The Huskies move to 10-5 on the season and 2-1 in Pac-12 play.
The Dawgs started the day down as they would be playing without their number one doubles and singles player in Elianne Douglas-Miron, moving everyone else up one spot in the lineup. The Utes jumped out to a 1-0 lead after clinching the doubles point with wins on courts three and one despite a tough battle from the Dawgs.
Angela Chen and Natalie Allen fought hard before falling 8-5 at the number three slot while Riko Shimizu and Miki Kobayashi dropped an 8-3 decision on court one to the 31st ranked Utah duo of Tereza Bekerova and Margo Pletcher.
In singles action, Utah went up 3-0 but the Huskies responded with wins on courts three, four and five to even the scoring leaving the deciding match to court two. First, Julija Lukac extended her winning streak to 12-straight matches as she posted a 6-4, 6-4 win on court three over Jena Cheng. She's won all 12 of her matches in this span in two sets.
Riko Shimizu followed suit winning her match against Margo Pletcher on court four despite dropping her first set 6-2. She responded with two-straight 6-1 wins to cut Utah's lead to 3-2. Capucine Gregoire won her eighth-straight match, playing on court five for the first time this season, as she earned a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win to even the score at three-all.
On court two, freshman Miki Kobayashi took on Sarah Richter in the deciding match. Richter opened with a 6-1 win but Kobayashi bounced back defeating Richter 6-3 in set two. In the third and final set, Utah was able to pull out a 6-4 victory giving the Utes the 4-3 win.
The Huskies return home next weekend to take on UCLA and USC on Friday March 27 and Saturday March 28 at the Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium (weather permitting) or the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
