SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Husky sand volleyball team kept its early season momentum going today with its first sweep in program history to leave Sacramento with a perfect 3-0 record. Washington did not drop a set in defeating the host Hornets of Sacramento State at the Sacramento Softball Complex.
After earning a 3-2 win in its first match yesterday against St. Mary's and then improving to a 4-1 count in match two against Pacific, the Huskies completed their first 5-0 win today against the Hornets. Washington will have another dual against Pacific on Monday on the Tigers' home courts in Stockton.
“We faced some tougher conditions today with some wind and I thought we handled it well,” said Head Coach Keegan Cook. “We continue to play well around the net, hitting and blocking. I thought Bailey and Courtney really stood out today, and Cassie and Kaleigh, I asked them to work on some things defensively and they were able to put that into practice
As is standard practice in sand volleyball, the fourth and fifth matches started things off, and as was the case in both matches yesterday, the Dawgs jumped out to a 2-0 lead with wins at both spots. At No. 4, Bailey Tanner and Courtney Schwan won the first set, 21-15, over Lauren Aikels and Lauren Kissell, and then cruised in the second set, 21-5. Melanie Wade and Justice Magraw also picked up their second straight win at No. 5, beating Kennedy Kurtz and Brigitte Murdock, 21-18, 21-18.
The clinching point came from Krista Vansant and Carly DeHoog at the No. 3 spot, as they earned a straight set win over Lexie Skalbeck and Shannon Boyle, 21-10, 21-18.
The No. 1 Husky duo of Kaleigh Nelson and Cassie Strickland picked up their first win of the year with a 21-17, 21-18 win over Kayla Beal and Sloan Lovett, and Crissy Jones and Tia Scambray moved to 3-0 with a 21-12, 21-14 win over Moran Stanley and Madeline Cannon.
