Dawgs Topple No. 8 Tigers Again To Cap Trip
March 24, 2015 | Beach Volleyball
STOCKTON, Calif. – Week one of year two could not have gone much better for the Washington sand volleyball team, as the Huskies finished up their opening road trip with a fourth victory, defeating No. 8 Pacific for the second time in three days, this one coming on Pacific's home sand at Raney Courts.
Saturday, the Huskies beat the Tigers on a neutral court in Sacramento by a 4-1 margin. The score was the same today, with UW winning the top four matches, three in straight sets.
The one and four matches were scheduled first, with Bailey Tanner and Courtney Schwan completing a 4-0 weekend of their own with a 21-16, 21-12 win over Wilk and Whitson of Pacific. In the previous match between the two, the Huskies had to battle back from a set down and win a tight three setter, but Schwan and Tanner were in control today.
The best match of the day came at the top spot, where Kaleigh Nelson and Cassie Strickland were looking to reverse the outcome of Saturday's match against Lexi Elman and Kat Schultz, who won in straight sets two days ago. Nelson and Strickland got the first set, 21-18, before Schultz and Elman won the second by the same score. Down 4-7 in the third, Nelson and Strickland got on a roll and won 11 of the final 14 points to win, 15-10.
Krista Vansant and Carly DeHoog clinched with a 21-13, 21-13 victory over Anne-Sophie Bauer and Megan Birch at No. 3. Pacific had switched up its two and three teams from Saturday's match, but Vansant and DeHoog were quick learners.
Freshmen Tia Scambray and Crissy Jones also wrapped up a 4-0 weekend with a 21-17, 21-11 win at the No. 2 spot over Mia Feiner and Gillian Howard. Pacific's point came at No. 5, as Justice Magraw and Melanie Wade came up short against Shelton/Poncetta, 21-10, 21-18.
“They did a really nice job again learning as the match went on and dealing with some windy conditions,” said Head Coach Keegan Cook. “The match at the one spot was really exciting. They played some great defense down the stretch and Kaleigh had a couple key blocks.”
Cook was pleased with how the Huskies pulled away in several of the second sets. “We did a good job learning and getting better as the match went on,” he said. “Each of the teams is figuring out its identity, so I'm excited to come back after spring break and help them each improve different areas of their game with a little more of a specific focus.”
