No. 50 Huskies Dominate No. 45 Arizona in 6-1 Victory
April 10, 2015 | Women's Tennis
The Huskies day was highlighted by a comeback win in the doubles point followed by five straight-sets victories in singles action led by Elianne Douglas-Miron's 6-1, 6-2 victory over No. 54 Lauren Marker.
“Today we came out were extremely motivated, knowing what was on the line with this being a must win match and I believe our team just came in with the right mindset,” said head coach Robin Stephenson. “The last four matches against the California schools made us better to be honest, they made us tougher and I feel like we made a lot of improvements even though we took some losses so I thought we came out here today and really just took care of business, it was good to see.”
Julija Lukac and Grace Ysidora set the tone for the match as they opened with an 8-1 victory at the number two spot in doubles play. The Wildcats top-25 duo of Shayne Austin and Briar Preston responded with a tough 8-6 win on court one but Capucine Gregoire and Riko Shimizu clinched the point for UW with their 8-7 win on court three.
“Winning the doubles point was huge,” said head coach Robin Stephenson. “It obviously gives you momentum heading into singles and had that gone the other way, who knows if Arizona may have come out differently in singles. We just did a very good job of battling in the doubles to take that point and then really used the momentum and got a lot of first sets and just got off to a really fast start in singles and took away their belief from the get go.”
Riding the 1-0 lead into singles, the Huskies quickly jumped out to a 3-0 advantage after Gregoire defeated Shayne Austin 6-1, 6-1 on court five and Shimizu knocked off Inge Hendrix, 6-0, 6-4 at six singles. Gregoire is now 12-4 on the season and has won 11 of her last 13 matches. Shimizu, playing singles for the first time in three matches, moves her record to 11-5.
Douglas-Miron clinched the match as she picked up her second win over a ranked opponent this season with her 6-1, 6-2 takedown of No. 54 Lauren Marker. The junior also defeated No. 36 Pleun Burgmans of Auburn earlier this season. Washington also got singles wins out of Julija Lukac and Miki Kobayashi with Lukac earning a 6-2, 6-3 decision for her team-leading 15th victory of the year and Kobayashi claimed a 7-6, 5-0 win as her opponent retired.
The Dawgs stay at home for their next match as they host No. 24 Arizona State on Sunday, April 12 at 11 a.m. at the Bill Quilian Tennis Stadium.
