Huskies Split Annual Dual With Bears
April 25, 2015 | Men's Rowing
SEATTLE – Washington men's rowing earned a split in four races against No. 1 Cal, winning the varsity four and second varsity eights races, but falling to the Bears in the freshman eight and the varsity eight Saturday, April 25, on the Montlake Cut.
“That was some really competitive, entertaining racing today,” UW men's rowing head coach Michael Callahan said. “You have to give credit to Cal, they were the better crew today in the varsity eight, but earning the split was encouraging for the depth of our program. We will learn from this loss and move forward.”
This was the first victory for Cal since 2006 in the annual battle between the varsity eights for the Schoch Cup. It was also the Huskies first loss to a collegiate crew in the varsity eight since the 2010 IRA National Championship grand final, where they finished second to the Bears.
“We look forward to facing Cal a couple more times this year,” Callahan said. “Cal's varsity eight is one of the most talented in the country. To be the best, you have to beat the best.”
The Huskies began the day with a win in the men's varsity four, beating the Bears with a time of 6:18.069 to Cal's 6:20.127.
Cal got its first win of the day when the Bears won the freshman eight race, beating the previously undefeated Washington freshman eight in the closest race of the day. Cal finished in 5:41.002 and Washington finished in 5:41.656 in the photo finish.
The Huskies won the men's second eight by nearly two boat lengths, finishing in 5:49.27 to win in dominating fashion. The Bears finished with a time of 5:55.11.
In the varsity eight, the featured race for the men's regatta, Cal's win was its first over Washington in nine years. The victory was the 30th for Cal in the varsity series. The Huskies currently hold a 73-30-1 advantage all-time.
The Huskies continue their season when they host the world-champion New Zealand U23 National Team and historic collegiate rowing power Columbia University in next weekend's Windermere Cup, set for Saturday, May 2, along the Montlake Cut.
