Husky Ones Beat Bruins But UCLA Takes Match

LOS ANGELES – Washington's No. 1 duo of Tia Scambray and Crissy Jones got the biggest win of their careers on the sand today, but the depth of fourth-ranked UCLA was too much and the Bruins got the overall victory over the Dawgs at the Pac-12 Beach Championships tonight at USC's Merle Norman Stadium.
The match between the second-seeded Bruins and the seventh-seeded Huskies was the fourth and final quarterfinal matchup today at the inaugural Pac-12 Championships. UCLA won the two through five matchups for the 4-1 victory, and the Huskies will now play Stanford tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the contender's bracket.
Jones and Scambray knocked off the top Bruins team of twins Megan and Nicole McNamara in straight sets, 21-16, 21-19. The McNamara twins had made the semifinals of the Pac-12 Pairs Bracket, falling to the same Arizona team that beat Jones and Scambray one round earlier. Jones and Scambray have now beaten the No. 1 teams from UCLA, California, and Oregon this season out of the Pac-12, with just one Pac-12 loss to Arizona.
The No. 2 match was a rematch from the first round of the pairs bracket yesterday, with Cassie Strickland and Courtney Schwan going against Ivey Schmitt and Kamila Tan. Yesterday, the Huskies won the first set, the Bruins took the second, and then UCLA pulled out a nailbiter, 16-14, third set to win. The story was a little too familiar for UW's liking today, as the Strickland and Schwan again took the first set, 21-15, but UCLA again rallied to win the second, 21-17, and clinched the victory with a 15-11 third set win.
The three through five matches were straight set wins for the Bruins. At No. 3, Lianna Sybeldon and Jade Finau, teaming up for the first time, fell to Carey/Zappia, 21-15, 21-10. Justice Magraw and Melanie Wade fell to Muno/Mgauamo at No. 4, 21-9, 21-14. UCLA's Cansani and Weaver won the No. 5 match over freshmen Destiny Julye and Lindsay Chalmers, 21-9, 21-14.
