November 24, 2017 | Women's Basketball
LAS VEGAS --- Mai-Loni Henson got an offensive rebound and put back with 35 seconds left, to break a tie and lead Washington a 67-64 over Creighton University on the first day of the South Point Shootout at the South Point Arena in Las Vegas.
Henson, who had a team-high 17 points and missed a double-double by one rebound, capped the victory with a clutch defensive rebound with five seconds left, then hit one of two free throws to give the Huskies the win.
Washington improves to 2-2 on the season with the victory while the Bluejays fall to 3-2 overall.
The Huskies looked to be cruising to an easy win, extending their lead to double-figures in the third and holding a 56-44 advantage after a Hannah Johnson layup. But the Huskies would go cold after that as Creighton went on a 14-4 run over the next six minutes, tying the game at 60-60 on a layup with 3:07 to play.
Amber Melgoza broke the deadlock with a pair of free throws 30 seconds later and Fapou Semebene got a steal and putback with 2:29 to go to stretch the lead back to four at 64-60.
Creighton would not go away, hitting its 13th three-pointer of the game with 2:03 to go to pull back within one. The teams exchanged possessions for the next minute before a UW foul put Creighton on the line where they hit one of two to tie the game back up at 64-64 with 51 seconds to go.
On the ensuing possession, Washington used a bit of clock before Khayla Rooks took a jumper at the top of the key. The shot was missed but Henson was right there to pull down the rebound and put it back up and in.
Creighton had a good look on a runner in the lane, but left it short. The Bluejays got the offensive rebound but the putback didn't go and Henson pulled down the board and the Huskies called timeout with 4.9 seconds left.
Melgoza had 14 points for the Huskies while Johnson added a season-high 10 points and six boards. Henson had 17 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals to pace Washington. The Huskies had all 10 players score and record a rebound in the game.
Washington was dominant on the boards, out-rebounding the Bluejays 52-38 including a 27-15 edge in the second half. Henson had a game-high nine rebounds while Moser added eight.
The Huskies have a tough task tomorrow, taking on No. 2 Texas beginning at 1:15 pm at the South Point Arena.
