Johnson's Double-Double Leads Huskies Past Cal State Fullerton, 83-74
November 08, 2018 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE --- Senior Hannah Johnson recorded her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds while junior Amber Melgoza added 18 points as Washington pulled out an 83-74 victory over Cal State Fullerton in its season-opener Thursday night at Alaska Airlines Arena.
The Huskies (1-0) saw four players in double-figures in scoring including freshman Haley Van Dyke, who poured in 12 points in her collegiate debut. Junior Mai-Loni Hensen added 10 points with sophomore Missy Peterson scoring nine points before fouling out midway through the fourth period.
The Titans (1-1) were led by fifth-year senior center Daeja Smith, who scored 22 points and added 14 rebounds in 37 minutes. Raina Perez added 20 points and had five assists in the losing effort.
Washington struggled to contain Cal State Fullerton's strong shooting night as the Titans shot 46.8% in the game, though they were well over 50% until running out of steam in the fourth quarter. Despite the strong shooting, Washington was able to stay in the game by forcing 19 turnovers and dominating inside with a 46-30 advantage in the paint.
Washington came out pressing early, forcing seven turnovers through the first four minutes. But the Huskies couldn't get any separation, hitting just 2 of their first 13 from the field. The teams traded buckets through the next minute before a quick five-point swing gave the visitors a 14-10 lead with 2:00 in the first. Henson answered back with a three on the other end to cut it back to a one-point game and buckets by Haley Van Dyke and Melgoza gave the Huskies a 19-18 lead after one quarter. Washington would score on each of its final possessions to close out the quarter, finishing 9-of-27 from the field.
The Huskies opened the second quarters with back-to-back buckets to stretch the lead to 23-18 two minutes in. But the Titans would respond with a pair of baskets of their own to once again make it a one-point game. The teams would go back and forth over the next the three minutes until a Fullerton three-pointer stretched the visitor's lead to 29-27 at the 4:28 mark. After going back and forth again, Hannah Johnson came alive, scoring 10-straight points for the Huskies as UW took back the lead at 42-38 with 29 seconds left. The Titans would make a free throw in the closing seconds to close to within three at 42-39 at the half.
The Titans came out firing in the second half, using a 6-3 run to tie the game at 45-45 1:30 into the period. After back-to-back baskets game the Huskies a four-point advantage three minutes in. But Fullerton responded with a seven-point run over the next two minutes to take a 52-49 lead at the media timeout. But the Huskies responded with an 11-2 run over the next two minutes to quickly stretch the lead to six and held on to a 66-60 lead going to the fourth quarter.
The teams struggled with turnovers in the fourth quarter until Van Dyke got a basket in transition to extend the Husky lead back to six at 70-64 at the 6:54 mark. One minute later, Henson drained a three from in front of the UW bench to key a quick 7-0 run to give the Huskies their largest lead to that point at 79-68 with 4:32 to play. Neither team would score again until the 1:27 mark when the Titan hits a single free throw. That basket would key a 6-0 CSUF run to close back within five with 45 seconds left. But Melgoza and T.T. Watkins would each drain two free throws to help the Huskies hold on for the 83-74 victory.
Melgoza's 18 points continues her streak of 14-straight games in double figures dating back to last year. The 2017-18 All-Pac-12 selection added five rebounds, two steals and an assist in the contest.
Van Dyke finished 6-of-9 from the field in the game, adding three rebounds while Rooks contributed seven points, six rebounds and a team-high four assists.
The Huskies improve to 34-11 all-time in home openers and to 27-17 in season-openers in what was the earliest home opener in program history.
