Huskies Shine On First Day of ITA NW Regionals

PALO ALTO, Calif. --- The Washington women's tennis team swept all four doubles matches with five singles players reaching the round of 32 on the first day of the 2019 ITA Northwest Regional Championships at Stanford University on Friday.
The day started with the Huskies winning all their doubles matches in the round of 64.
Natsuho Arakawa and Vanessa Wong teamed up to defeat Jacinta Milenkoski and Gerda Upeniece of Portland State, 8-0, while Sedona Gallagher and Katarina Kopcalic beat Jenna Dorian and Tsveti Yotova of Sacramento State, 8-2. On the other side of the draw, Ashley Chang and Delara Zamani won their match over Lottie Meszaros and Nina Nikitovic of Portland State, 8-6 with Ashley Weil and Nika Zupancic defeated Neli Sunjic and Jana Tanevska of Portland, 8-3.
On the singles side, all eight Huskies won their first-round match with five winning in the round of 64 to advance to the round of 32.
Vanessa Wong picked up a pair of wins, beating Kristina Breisacher of UC Davis 6-1, 6-4 before downing Alli Valk of Portland State, 6-1, 6-0. She takes on Susanne Boyden of Cal Poly on Saturday morning.
Sedona Gallagher cruised into the round of 32 with a pair of convincing wins, dropping just two games over her two matches. She beat UC Davis' Skyler Holm 6-0, 6-0, then downed Saint Mary's Chloe Goyette 6-2, 6-0. Gallagher will have a tough match-up on Saturday morning, facing off against Stanford's Angelica Blake.
Natsuho Arakawa had a pair of straight-set victories, beating San Jose State's Rozalina Touseva 6-3, 6-1 in her first match, then coming back with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Sara Tsukamoto of UC Davis in the evening. She looks to keep her run going on Saturday, opening with Dohee Lee from Pacific in her round of 32 match.
Katarina Kopcalic picked up a pair of straight-set wins as well, cruising past Lauren Ko of UC Davis 6-3, 6-3 before a quick 6-2, 6-0 win over Eastern Washington's Louise Waite. Her opponent will be determined later Friday night as the other match in her bracket was still being played.
The easiest route to the round of 32 belonged to Nika Zupancic. Her first match of the day was cut short with her leading 3-2 as her opponent—UC Davis' Shirley Hall—suffered an injury and had to retire from the match. Zupancic then advanced via walk-over as her second-round opponent also suffered an injury and couldn't start the match. She will be well rested for her round of 32 match against Emily Arbuthnott from Stanford on Saturday.
Zoey Weil gutted out a hard-fought 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 win over Jasi Dunk from Cal in her first-round match, but was unable to win her second-round match, falling 6-4, 6-0 to Klara Kosan from Pacific.
Delara Zamani also won a tough first-round match against Cal Poly's Melissa LaMette 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-2, but couldn't pull out a second-round three-setter, falling 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 to Saint Mary's Jordan Harris.
Freshman Ashley Chang advanced to the second round after her opponent suffered an injury late in the second set. However, she lost a three-set match to Santa Clara's Maddie Pothoff 6-1, 2-6, 6-2.
The Huskies return to the courts on Saturday, opening the day with doubles matches beginning at 9:00 a.m. following by singles matches at 10:30 a.m.
