Huskies Open 2019-20 Season at ITA All-American Pre-Qualifying

TULSA, Okla. --- Washington's women's tennis team opened the 2019-20 season on Saturday, with three Huskies taking part in the pre-qualifying rounds of the 2019 ITA All-American Singles Tournament at the University of Tulsa.
Sophomore Nika Zupancic came away with the lone victory of the day for Washington, but lost later in the day. In the first match, she came away with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Meredith Jones of Air Force, but then suffered a 6-1, 6-3 to the No. 5 seed Elise van Heuvelen-Treadwell of Iowa.
Sophomore Sedona Gallagher opened the tournament against Saby Nihalani. Gallagher took the first set 6-3, but lost a tight second set 7-5 and lost 6-2 in the third.
Senior Natsuho Arakawa dropped her a very close first match of the tournament, winning her first set against Taylor Bridges of LSU 6-4, but losing the next two sets 7-5 and 7-5.
Fellow senior Katarina Kopcalic wsa unable to pull out a win in her first match, losing 6-3, 6-3 to Lucia Marzal of Miami.
Washington still has four players still to go in the singles and doubles competition of the tournament. On Monday, junior Vanessa Wong plays in the qualifying round of the tournament, where she needs three wins to advance to the main draw round on Wednesday.
The Huskies also have a pair of doubles teams set to compete on Monday as Wong and Zupancic will team up along with the team of Arakawa and freshman Ashley Chang.
