Huskies Roll Past Weber State, 94-41
November 13, 2019 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE --- Six different Washington players scored in double-figures and the Huskies forced 38 turnovers as they cruised past Weber State 94-41 in a non-conference game on Wednesday morning at Alaska Airlines Arena.
Washington (2-1) was impressive on both sides of the ball, scoring its most points in a game since Head Coach Jody Wynn took over the program in 2017-18 and allowing the fewest points over that same stretch.
The Huskies also forced 38 turnovers, converting those into 37 points. The turnovers were the most forced by a UW team since turning over Gonzaga 38 times in 1998. It is also the most by a Pac-12 team in nearly six years, since Oregon forced 38 turnovers against Southern on Dec. 18, 2013. Overall, Washington has forced 90 turnovers through three games including forcing 31 against Cal State Bakersfield in the season opener.
A trio of Huskies led the team with 12 points with Darcy Rees, Amber Melgoza and Haley Van Dyke netting a dozen points each. Ali Bamberger reached double-figures for the first time in her career with 11 points while T.T. Watkins also scored 11 in the game with Mai-Loni Henson adding 10. Each Husky to see action in the game scored at least five points.
In addition to the 12 points scored by Van Dyke, she also added a career-high seven steals while Henson and Missy Peterson contributed a game-high five assists each. Melgoza pulled down seven rebounds including three on the offensive glass.
Washington got off to a bit of a slow start offensively, scoring just 14 points on 6-of-17 shooting to take a 14-6 lead after one quarter.
In the second, the Huskies opened up a 10-point lead midway through the period, but broke it open by ending the half on a 16-3 run including scoring the final nine points of the quarter to take a 36-13 lead at the break.
After exchanging buckets with the Wildcats to open the second half, a Rees three-pointer keyed a 12-point Husky run which quickly put Washington up 56-21 with 4:03 to go in the quarter. The Huskies closed out the quarter with back-to-back three-pointers by Watkins and Van Dyke and held a 69-31 lead after three.
But the fourth quarter was all Washington. The Huskies began the quarter with an 8-0 run and closed the game by scoring the final seven points, outscoring WSU 25-10 over the final 10 minutes to win 94-41.
The 53-point victory was the largest under Coach Wynn and matched the 13th-largest margin of victory in program history. Oddly enough, it was the exact same margin of victory as Washington's 114-61 win over Weber State in 1985.
Melgoza's first bucket of the game gave her 1,225 career points and moved her into 19th place on the UW All-Time Scoring List. She followed that bucket by stealing the inbound pass and putting in a tough layup. Melgoza finished the game with 12 points and has 1,235 career points, averaging 13.7 points per game throughout her career. That includes scoring just 53 points in 25 games as a freshman.
Wednesday's game was the first annual Field Trip/Kids Day Game for the Huskies with an early start time to allow kids from local schools to experience the University of Washington campus, watch a basketball game at Alaska Airlines Arena and take part in numerous educational opportunities as well.
Washington takes a bit of a break before returning to action on Saturday, Nov. 23, hosting cross-town foe Seattle University in a non-conference game at 2:00 pm.
